Pushpamala N studied sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts at MS University, Baroda. Her formal training aside, photography has been the primary medium of her art practice, with her work being labelled ‘performance’ photography.
Pushpamala’s shows include ‘Avega – The Passion’ (Galerie Zurcher, Paris, 2013), ‘Backflip: Feminism and Humour Contemporary Art’ (Margaret Lawrence Gallery, Melbourne, 2013), ‘Poses and Views’ (Nature Morte, Berlin, 2013), ‘Paris, Mumbai, New Delhi’ (Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2011), and ‘Samtidigt i Indien’ (Helsinki City Art Museum, Helsinki, 2011), and many more.
In this video, Pushpamala talks about her interest in the beginnings of photography and film and how she borrows elements of the original techniques in her work. Her art consists of an attempt to release photography from documentary, to make fiction with the tropes of photodocumentation. In her photographic tableaux, we see an exploration of the possibility of becoming other through art.
